What makes a good dark color palette?
A good dark color palette is defined by intentional balance and harmony. Rather than arbitrary dark shades, effective dark color schemes combine deep, comfortable background tones with carefully measured accent colors that preserve clarity and focus.
High-quality dark palettes maintain usable contrast without causing visual fatigue. By pairing grounded charcoals, deep slates, or midnight hues with subdued secondary tones and crisp highlights, these palettes establish natural visual hierarchy and depth.

How to use dark colors in UI design
When crafting a dark UI color palette, avoid using pure black (#000000) as your primary background. Pure black creates stark, vibrating contrast against bright white text, resulting in optical glare. Instead, softer dark neutrals—such as deep gunmetals (#0F172A), charcoals (#121212), or warm obsidian tones—provide a much more comfortable reading surface.
Use elevation to establish spatial hierarchy. In dark mode color palette design, higher elevation elements (such as cards, menus, and modals) should have slightly lighter background shades than the underlying canvas. Layer your surfaces thoughtfully, verify WCAG AA text contrast ratios, and apply accent colors sparingly to call-to-actions, badges, and interactive states.
